Egg Shell Cracker Review
There are a lot of intriguing egg gadgets on the market – from egg cookers and yolk separators to fancy omelet pans. We’ve decided to give some of these gadgets a try to see if they are worth the hype. We’ll post our results here and on our social media pages, hoping to share some helpful insights. If you have gadget suggestions for us to review, send us a note.
Egg Shell Cracker
For those who love a soft boiled egg for breakfast, we thought we’d test an egg shell cracker. We ordered a COLIBROX tool that claims it also works on raw eggs as well.
Directions indicate that you set the round cup portion over the top of the egg, lift up the handle and let it go, allowing the weight at the end of the handle to hit the cutter and push it into the top of the egg, which should produce a clean, round hole.
Raw Eggs
We first tried holding the egg while using the cracker. It took several tries to get the tool to cut far enough through the shell to allow us to remove the top section. You can see in the second photo below that our initial attempt hardly made any impact at all. On the third attempt and by pulling the handle up higher each time, we finally cut deep enough to be able to remove the top. However, it was a rather messy outcome with egg whites running over the sides, so we tried a different approach.
Next, we tried leaving the egg in the carton to see if that would make a difference. As you can see below, we still had trouble getting a clean cut the first couple of attempts. And again, when we did remove the top, the egg whites ran down the sides.
Soft Boiled Eggs
Now for the reason we bought this gadget in the first place -- to see how well it cuts the top off a soft boiled egg! By this point, we had a better sense of how much pressure was needed to break through the shell, so it worked a little better. The tool effectively made a nice round hole just big enough for a small spoon or small piece of toast.
Conclusion
Unless you really want a perfectly round hole at the top of your soft boiled egg, we don’t see much advantage to this tool, especially when it comes to using it on raw eggs. It wasn’t easy to find the right pressure needed and ended up being far messier than just cracking the egg over a edge of a bowl. We suggest your gadget drawer can do without this one!
